I love me a good pregnancy trope. I know, I know—it’s hit or miss for some. But this one? It was a total bullseye at the rodeo for me.
Full disclosure: I didn’t read these in order (classic me), but I will be circling back to book one, Crossroads, ASAP.
Until then, I’ll just be here, basking in my undying love for Jax Haven—part-owner of Haven River Ranch. When his sister-in-law Indy (the MFC from book one) needs a manager to cover her maternity leave, she hires Sasha.
Sasha’s character is carrying some heavy trauma—emotionally and literally (girl pulled into town with just an air mattress and a few boxes). Couldn’t fit her past in the trunk, bless her heart.

What I Liked About This Book
Jax. Never deterred. Not even when Sasha brushes him off over and over. Even after she finds out she’s pregnant and tries to keep her walls high, he’s all in—slowly chipping away at her defenses, brick by brick.
Is this a storyline we’ve seen before? Sure. But Devney Perry makes it feel fresh by digging deep into the characters’ histories and letting their slow-burn connection simmer. I loved the “tell me a secret” / “tell me a lie” motif that runs through the entire book—from the first chapter to the last. It gave the story this subtle emotional thread that made everything feel richer.
And don’t even get me started on Jax’s rotating list of pet names. Swoon. Depending on his mood, we get sweetheart, honey, babe, beautiful, baby… We. Get. Them. All.

What I Didn’t Like In the Book (Hint: I Loved It All)
Honestly? Not much. I recently had my second baby, and those doctor appointments are still fresh in my brain. That said, I could nitpick about the pregnancy appointments being glossed over, but I’ll spare you. The book wasn’t about OB appointments (thank god).
This was an easy 5/5 for me. Grab it. Obsess over WHO EDDIE IS every other chapter. Fall headfirst for Montana—and Jax. You won’t regret it.
Who This Book Is For
- Fans of Devney Perry: If you’ve read your share of Devney’s books, you’ll love her even more here. Sunlight offers deeper character work than some of her earlier Eden series novels. These two are flawed, full-hearted, and written with real emotional weight.
- Readers who want emotional depth: This isn’t sunshine and rainbows from page one. Both Sasha and Jax work for their happily ever after—and if you’re a sucker for a slow-burn with heavy inner pining, you’ll be all in.
- Pregnancy-trope peeps: Whether you’re pregnant, have had a baby, or just love the payoff of a “surprise baby turns everything around” arc, this one hits the spot. The family-building arc is tender, believable, and so satisfying.
Final Thoughts
If you’re in the mood for a romance that’s equal parts tender and grounded (with just enough slow burn to make the payoff worth it) Sunlight is a must-read. Between Jax’s patient persistence and Sasha’s quiet strength (and super sauciness), I found myself swept up in their story. It’s the kind of book that makes you pause, sigh, and maybe hug it when you’re done.
